Sedation Dentistry Explained: Which Option Is Right for Your Dental Anxiety?

Sedation dentistry for a relaxed smile

If fear keeps you out of the dental chair, sedation dentistry can change that. Modern options range from a light, relaxing gas you breathe during your visit to deeper sedation where you remember almost nothing of the appointment. All are safe, monitored, and far more common than most patients realize — an estimated 1 in 3 adults avoids the dentist due to anxiety.

At Stehl Family Dental, sedation dentistry in Lee’s Summit is one of the most requested additions to our services — here’s how to know which option fits you.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses medication to help you stay calm and comfortable during dental treatment. It’s not just for surgery — many patients use light sedation for routine cleanings or fillings they’d otherwise put off. The goal is simple: remove the fear barrier so your oral health stops paying the price for your anxiety.

The 3 Main Types of Dental Sedation

Nitrous Oxide (“laughing gas”) Oral Sedation IV Sedation
How it’s given Mask over the nose Pill ~1 hour before Directly into bloodstream
How it feels Light, floaty, relaxed Drowsy, deeply calm Sleep-like; little memory
Awareness Fully awake Awake but relaxed Minimal awareness
Recovery Minutes — drive yourself home Several hours — need a ride Rest of day — need a ride
Typical add-on cost $50 – $150 $150 – $500 $300 – $1,000
Best for Mild anxiety, routine visits Moderate anxiety, longer visits Severe anxiety, oral surgery

Nitrous Oxide

The lightest option. You breathe a sweet-smelling gas through a small mask, feel relaxed within minutes, and the effect wears off almost immediately after the mask comes off. Great for nervous patients at a routine dental check-up or filling — and safe for kids.

Oral Conscious Sedation

You take a prescribed pill about an hour before your appointment and arrive already calm. You stay awake and can respond to questions, but most patients remember very little. Ideal for longer procedures like root canals or multiple fillings in one visit.

IV Sedation

Medication delivered through a vein produces a sleep-like state with continuous monitoring. This is the usual choice for wisdom teeth removal, complex tooth extractions, and implant surgery — or for patients whose anxiety makes any treatment impossible otherwise.

Does Sedation Dentistry Hurt?

No. Sedation itself is painless (oral sedation is just a pill; nitrous is just breathing). Local anesthetic is still used to numb the treatment area — sedation simply means you won’t be anxious, and often won’t remember, while it happens.

Who Is a Good Candidate?

Sedation may be right for you if you:

  • Cancel or postpone dental visits because of fear
  • Have a strong gag reflex that makes treatment difficult
  • Need a lot of work done and want fewer, longer visits
  • Have very sensitive teeth or trouble getting numb
  • Had a traumatic dental experience in the past
  • Haven’t seen a dentist in years and feel embarrassed about it

That last one matters: we see patients every month who stayed away for 5, 10, even 20 years. No lectures, no judgment — just a plan to get you healthy again, starting with a gentle dental check-up.

Is Sedation Safe?

Yes, when administered by a trained dental team. Before recommending any sedation we review your full medical history and current medications. During treatment, your vital signs are monitored throughout. Nitrous oxide in particular has one of the longest safety records of any medication used in dentistry — it’s been used for over 150 years.

Patients with certain conditions (pregnancy, some respiratory issues, specific medications) may need a modified approach, which is exactly what the consultation is for.

What About Dental Emergencies?

Anxiety gets worse when you’re in pain. If you’re facing an emergency dental visit — a cracked tooth, severe toothache, or abscess — tell us about your anxiety when you call. We can usually arrange sedation for emergency treatment so fear doesn’t delay care that can’t wait.

Take the First Step (It’s Just a Conversation)

Yes. Many anxious patients use nitrous oxide for routine cleanings and check-ups — it’s a common, reasonable request.
Usually, but it depends on the condition and medications. Your dentist reviews your medical history first and monitors you throughout treatment.
